PRESS RELEASE

FIX AMERICA: THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN

Town Hall special moderated by Frank Sesno brings together respected panel and voting audience to help create realistic post-election agenda that focuses on resolving “fiscal cliff” and other economic issues

Nov. 28, 2012, Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD-- As Congress returns to grapple with a daunting economic agenda and the “fiscal cliff,” Face the Facts USA, America Speaks, and RLTV have joined together to produce an interactive Town Hall television event focused on the creation of a realistic, post-election agenda for America’s political leaders.

Fix America: The People Have Spoken – A Face the Facts USA Special, premiering on RLTV, Thursday, Nov. 29 at 9 PM ET, brings together a respected and independent panel of thinkers, reporters and insiders to consider and relate the relevant facts about the impending “fiscal cliff,” and what is needed to restore the health of and confidence in the American economy. Filmed at The George Washington University, whose School of Media and Public Affairs oversees Face the Facts USA, the Town Hall features a multi-generational audience which drives the conversation and helps create an agenda for the nation’s newly elected political leaders. The audience participates through instant polling.  This polling is conducted on key issues that affect the U.S. economy and budget deficit, such as raising tax revenue, and helping Social Security and Medicare become solvent for the long term.

The event is moderated by Frank Sesno, Director of The George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs and Chief Executive of Face the Facts USA. Panelists include:

  • Former Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA), Director of Woodrow Wilson International Center;
  • Former Rep. Mark Kennedy (R-MN), Director of The George Washington University Graduate Program of Political Management;
  • Nia-Malika Henderson, national political reporter for The Washington Post;
  • Mara Liasson, national political correspondent for NPR; and
  • Mark Zandi, Chief Economist, Moody’s Analytics

“As part of our ongoing partnership with Face the Facts USA, RLTV is presenting this Town Hall discussion to provide our viewers with a fact-based presentation of the economic and fiscal issues facing the country,” said RLTV Senior Vice President of Programming and Production Elliot Jacobson. “These are critical issues to RLTV’s Generation 50+ audience, with far-reaching implications for them and their families.”

“Throughout the campaign season there was a tremendous amount of misinformation about the fiscal challenges facing our country. Our job as a university and as journalists is to provide simple, straightforward facts,” said Sesno. “We still have heard very little from our elected leaders about realistic solutions to deal with the looming fiscal cliff, which is now a few short weeks away.  Yet in this forum, we see that if we talk straight and give consumers solid facts, they recognize that tough decisions have to be made, and are ready to face the facts.”

 Fix America: The People Have Spoken – A Face the Facts USA Special  is co-sponsored by RLTV, the only cable network and online destination for adults 50+, America Speaks, which engages citizens in governance, and Face the Facts USA, a new nonpartisan, multi-platform content hub and civic engagement initiative dedicated to elevating the tone of national debate with provocative facts.

RLTV and Face the Facts USA are partnering on a series of televised panels and Town Hall meetings.  Fix America: The People Have Spoken – A Face the Facts USA Special is the third in the series. Previously, the two organizations have partnered on a pre-election discussion on the debt and the deficit, and a panel produced in co-operation with the Meals on Wheels Association of America on ending senior hunger.
