What It’s Like Living on Social Security

Barbara Woodruff shares her story, and it may surprise you
No doubt you’ve heard politicians and pundits debating the state of Social Security, and throwing out all kinds of numbers. But the bottom line for retirees has always been simple: Will I get enough to live on? Barbara Woodruff, of St. Louis, can answer yes to that question — but just barely. “It’s very difficult living on Social Security,” says the 65-year old, who retired when she turned 62.

74-Year-Old Gold Medal Coach Deserves More Respect

Are You Significant or Merely Successful?

I was listening to yet another talk at yet another gathering for “executive development.” But this was different. The gathering wasn’t in an anonymous hotel ballroom. It was at a self-contained ecological farm in England. The executives there were a mix of young aspiring business people from leading British companies and idealistic social entrepreneurs from…

Seeing America Through New Eyes

In 2011, at 50, I took early retirement from my job as an air traffic controller, left Texas and began traveling the world. Since then, with the exception of a few short visits back to see family, I’ve been hopping from bases as diverse as the Chiapas Highlands of Central Mexico to my current home on the banks of the Mekong River in Southeast Asia...
